Decorating Tips for Pet Owners

Pets bring many wonderful things to our lives. They offer unconditional love and countless purrs, tail wags, and cuddles, and have a way of making us chuckle even on the worst days. Of course, being a pet parent isn’t all snuggles and doggy kisses: your furbaby will create a bit of extra work for you as far as housecleaning. In the process of being adorable, Fido and Fluffy will also leave their fur on your clothes and belongings.

Hiding Litter Boxes

The fact that our feline friends will use their own bathrooms to discretely do their business is definitely one of the bonuses of being owned by a cat. Fluffy’s personal powder room won’t do much for your décor, however. There are some great ways to camouflage litter boxes. You can cut a hole in an enclosed end table or plastic tote, hide it behind a folding screen, or shop for a customized piece.

Choose The Right Fabrics

When shopping, look for fabrics that don’t trap fur, such as leather and microfiber. Flooring is a better bet than carpet, as it’s much easier to clean. We also recommend getting drapes for window treatments, rather than blinds, and putting washable slipcovers on your furniture.

Dinner Hack

Put a placemat or a dinner tray beneath your pet’s food and water bowls. It will trap dropped bits of food, and will be much easier to clean than the floor itself.

Pet Pantry

If you have room, consider making a pet pantry. A simple standalone cabinet or repurposed armoire will do nicely. You can keep Fido and Fluffy’s toys, clothing, first aid kits, carriers, leashes and collars, and food there, instead of having your furball’s belongs scattered here and there.

Pick the Right Plants

Plants can add a wonderful, natural touch to any home. They also filter air, which can help fight pet odors and make your home smell better. Just be sure to choose the right plants. You can check the ASPCA website for a list of toxic and non-toxic plants.

5 Things to Teach Your Puppy in 2016

Are you starting out 2016 with a puppy? Congratulations on your furry new arrival! Puppyhood is a crucial time for our canine pals, so little Fido certainly has a big year ahead of him. In order to get your new furbaby started out on the right paw in life, you’ll want to make sure to put some time into training the little guy now, while he’s young.

Basic Commands

Every dog should know the five basic commands of good doggy obedience. These commands, which are Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down, are not only important for petiquette, but for safety reasons as well. Teach little Fido one command at a time, and make sure he has mastered each one before moving on to the next.

Crate Training

A crate can be a valuable tool, as long as it’s used properly. It’s very likely that your pet will at some point need to be crated. This will be much easier on Fido if he’s already crate trained! Teach your furbaby to see his crate as a safe, cozy den. To get your furry pal used to his crate, give him treats, toys, and meals in and around it.

House Training

Needless to say, housetraining is a crucial part of good doggy petiquette. Start working with your little buddy right away. As a rule of thumb, puppies can only hold their bladders about an hour for each month of age, so lots of walks are in order. Of course, there are many different methods for housetraining. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Not To Beg

Fido may earn an ‘A’ in theater arts for his dramatic begging tactics, but don’t fall for those big, sad eyes. Begging is bad doggy manners! If you want to indulge the little guy with a special treat, put it in his dish.

Social Skills

Socialization is crucial to your pup’s mental and emotional development! Socialize little Fido by exposing him to friendly people and dogs, and taking him to different places. Just make sure he’s had all his shots first, and is current on his parasite control.
