Unfortunately, warm weather is just as inviting to ticks as
it is to us. These unwanted parasites are very dangerous, as they can transmit
deadly diseases, such as Lyme disease, to your beloved pet. Below, a vet
discusses protecting your pet from ticks.
Parasite Prevention
Keeping up with your four-legged pal’s parasite prevention
products is the first, and most crucial, step in protecting your pet from
ticks. There are many different options available for flea and tick prevention.
Topical drops are very popular, as they are easy to use, safe, and effective.
Collars, powders, sprays, and shampoos can also be effective. Ask your vet for
specific recommendations. When applying products, always follow the directions
closely, and never double up on products.
Outdoor Property
Did you know that simply adding a three-foot gravel or mulch
border around your property can significantly reduce the number of ticks that
make it on to your land? Ticks love to hide in tall grasses, but they often
turn back when faced with open pathways, as too much direct sunlight can dry
them out. Just be sure to avoid using cocoa mulch, as it is toxic to dogs.
You’ll also want to keep your lawn, trees, and hedges neatly trimmed, and
remove any dead vegetation that could provide inviting habitats.
Indoor
Ticks can sometimes be found lurking behind baseboards and
moldings, or in piles of clutter. Regular cleaning will help keep ticks away.
Vacuuming removes both ticks and eggs, so be sure to vacuum regularly. Ticks
can also crawl through window screens. If you like to open your windows, choose
windows that aren’t near hedges, trees, or vines.
Daily Checks
Check your pet’s fur daily for any signs of unwanted
hitchhikers. To make this fun for both you and your furbaby, incorporate these
daily inspections into some quality cuddle time. If you do find a tick, remove
it carefully. To be on the safe side, save the tick or take a photo of it, so
your vet can identify it if needed.
